Lauren Loricchio
Why do people love the attention of the camera? In a society where the public is
constantly under surveillance, why do people desire to expose their private lives as well?
My work investigates the symbiotic relationship that develops between the photographer and subject - the subject desires to perform
for the camera, and the photographer seeks to reveal this.
In contemporary society children are raised in front of the television,
consequently mimicking what they see on screen. Becoming the center of the camera’s gaze forces us to
subconsciously act out specific stereotyped roles learned from a young age. There is seldom a time when a person can be observed
acting ‘naturally’ in front of the camera. With these photographs, I seek to explore the
performance that the camera solicits.
